Anyone who thinks Bellinzona only has castles to offer is definitely wrong. A little way outside the city, a small cable car leads up to a true natural paradise. Two small mountain lakes, a rustic Ticino village and a unique overnight stay in the Birdbox make for an unforgettable excursion.
From the city centre in Bellinzona, a bus runs to the valley station of the cable car that leads up to Mornera. A small paradise awaits at around 1,400 metres up: Surrounded by larches and deciduous trees, Mornera offers a wonderful view over Bellinzona, the Magadino plain and, on a clear day, the main peaks of the Alps.
The upper station is the starting point for a variety of hikes. Whether it’s a summit hike to the Gaggio or Cima dell’Uomo or a more leisurely circular hike to Alp Monda or the Albagno hut, the hiking options are many and varied. The via ferrata
Tre Signori is also nearby. Between Mornera and Albagno, an exciting via ferrata with a great view over the Magadino plain awaits adventurous guests. The leisurely circular walk to the small lake a little above the mountain village is recommended. A bit stony at the beginning, the route gently leads upwards, on a path that is easy to follow. In around 15 minutes, the hikers reach the small mountain lake. The bench by the lake is an ideal place to take a break before heading back.
The cable car runs down to the middle station in the rustic mountain village of Curzútt. In earlier times, several hamlets existed around Curzútt, and around 700 people lived on the high plateau. Only Curzútt has survived the test of time. The village, designated as a cultural asset worthy of protection, captivates with its stone houses, which today house modern infrastructure, with a restaurant, hostel and a range of venues for seminars. Also nearby is the 270-metre-long suspension bridge
Ponte Tibetano. Thanks to the bridge, the impassable valley that separates Monte Carasso and Sementina can be overcome.
When exploring Curzútt and the surrounding chestnut forests, something catches the eye: the
Birdbox. In the middle of nature in total privacy, you’ll find overnight accommodation of a special kind. With wonderful views over the Magadino plain and the church of San Barnárd, the room offers every comfort and guarantees an unforgettable experience. Winding down in the evening on the terrace, experiencing a restful night in the middle of nature and waking up to birdsong – a unique experience through and through. To round off the experience, an enjoyable breakfast will be served at the Ristorante Ostello Curzútt.
How to get there: From Bellinzona railway station, take bus 2 or bus 311 as far as the “Monte Carasso, Urènn/Funivia” bus stop.
