Brunnenberg and Lake Oberblegisee

Description

The Brunnenbergbahn provides access to some great walk- ing country. It follows the ank of the Brunnenberg as far as the reservoir. Worth a visit is the deep-blue Lake Oberblegisee at the foot of the Glärnisch.
The Luchsingen-Brunnenberg cable car is still used by electric utility Technische Betriebe Glarus for the maintenance of its power stations, in addition to transporting hikers to an attractive place to start out on their rambles in this vast hiking region. The lower stretch of the cable car route, which starts at 516 metres above sea level west of the village centre in the “Bath” district (named after the former sulphur baths), runs along the valley cleft of the Bächibach stream before starting its ascent of the slope to the equalisation reservoir on the Brunnenberg at 1,000m. Once you arrive in hiking paradise, you can embark on your enjoyable tour.

The one-hour walk up to Alp Bösbächi, where you can stay the night as well as recharge your batteries in Restaurant Bächistübli, is well worth a visit. The alp is on the high mountain trail from Braunwald to nearby magical Lake Oberblegisee.

Hike to Lake Oberblegi, this mountain lake is without any visible out ow; treacherous undercurrents in its depths. Once upon a time, it is said that a foolhardy young herdsman tried to swim across the lake; down in the valley his mother was drawing water from the Leuggelbach stream when his head suddenly appeared tumbling down it.
