Description

The funicular runs from Biel/Bienne up to the Magglingen mountain station. The journey lasts about 10 minutes. During the ride you get views of the Weissenstein, the Alpine range, and Lake Murten.
When you arrive in Magglingen, you can visit the Federal Office of Sport's viewing terrace. The mountain station is also the starting point for various hikes in the surrounding area.

Hiking options

Magglingen - Twannberg - Twannbachschlucht-Twann

  • Length: approx. 10 km

  • The hike initially follows the old Kurhausweg and through the Nidau Forest. After a dense conifer forest you reach Twannberg. From here it goes over cobblestones (an old cart road) that can become slippery when wet. The increasingly narrow Twannbach Gorge is damp and partly secured. A staircase leads steeply down to Twann at the exit.

Magglingen - Adventure Trail - Restaurant End der Welt

  • The adventure trail starts at the Magglingenbahn mountain station and is a pram-friendly footpath. It crosses the grounds of the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO). The path shares interesting facts about the world of sport. It showcases well-known personalities and their athletic achievements. Not least, the path invites you to participate in various movement tasks, a competition, and exciting sports puzzles.
  • Free parking is right in front of the station building. Please note that during renovations at the valley station until around the end of 2025 the parking spaces in front of the building may not be available.
  • Alternative parking options are available at Parkhaus Museen nearby. It is located on the Rüschlistrasse and is about a one-minute walk from the valley station.

Traveling with a wheelchair or stroller

  • The funicular itself is fully wheelchair accessible. The cars have space for wheelchairs and prams.
  • The valley station will be renovated to be accessible by the end of 2025. Until then it won't be accessible.
  • At the mountain station there is a wheelchair-accessible toilet.
  • From the Magglingen mountain station, a short, paved path leads directly to the restaurant.

Traveling with a dog

  • Dogs under 30 cm at the shoulder travel free of charge in a container (e.g., basket or bag).
  • Larger dogs or without a container require a ticket at half the price of a regular fare.
  • They must be kept on a leash for the entire journey. In some cases, a muzzle is required.
