Dans un avenir sombre, 100 adolescents participent à la «Long Walk», une marche annuelle au cours de laquelle ils doivent avancer à une vitesse constante de plus de six kilomètres à l'heure. Ceux qui reçoivent trois avertissements en une heure sont abattus. Seul le dernier survivant obtient tout ce qu'il désire. Au cours de cette compétition impitoyable, des amitiés étroites se nouent, même si chacun sait qu'un seul pourra survivre.
