Ski touring with palm tree views

Description

Unusual, and all the more appealing for it: explore the snow-covered mountains around Lake Maggiore on touring skis and then relax under palm trees.
"Ticino is best known for being the sun-drenched corner of Switzerland with a mild climate. Many forget, however, that Lake Maggiore and the valleys that surround it are ringed by lofty peaks that are powdered with snow during the winter. This wintry side of southern Ticino is little known, but the area is home to a great many ski touring routes amid the Alpine mountain world. One such touring route will bring you to the top of the Gridone, otherwise known as Monte Limidario, almost 2,200 metres above sea level. The mighty mountain towers above Lake Maggiore, its northern face descending into Centovalli. As you ascend, the lake far below is always in sight. The peak offers a panoramic view that is second to none. The ridge of the Gridone forms the national border with Italy to the west and south.
