Mario Botta, the architect from the Ticino, is known around the world. One of his works is the monumental San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995). In Lugano, he has left his mark in a number of places.

One of these places is the former head office of Banca del Gottardo (1987, now Banca della Svizzera Italiana), another the Casino of Campione d'Italia (2007). The latter is visible from the shores of Lake Lugano. Not to be missed is a visit to Monte Tamaro and the Santa Maria degli Angeli church (1996), a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Botta‘s latest achievement is the bombastic peak restaurant on Monte Generoso, which will open in 2017.
