Description

At the southern end of Lake Lugano is the 1,701 metre high Monte Generoso. This lofty altitude makes it without a doubt the best mountain for views in the canton of Ticino.
The new restaurant “Fiore di pietra” (stone flower) created by the famous architect Mario Botta stands majestically on a rugged plateau on the mountain. Its windows offer breathtaking 360° panoramic views, taking in the lakes, the city of Lugano as well as the Matterhorn and Jungfrau all the way to the Bernina Range.

Nostalgic journey to the summit
A cog railway has been taking visitors up to the peak of Monte Generoso for 125 to enjoy these breathtaking views. It is about 9km long and runs along a magical stretch of mountain scenery in the Monte Generoso nature park. In addition to electric trains, nostalgic modes of transport also use this cog railway line, including the oldest steam train still in operation in Switzerland, built in 1890, and trains from the 1950s. A ride in these trains brings the time of the Belle Époque back to life.

Activities on and around the mountain
There is much to discover on Monte Generoso:
Keen hikers can explore the mountain on more than 51km of hiking trails. The Nature Trail and the Ice Pits Nevere are just two of the many hiking paths. The Ice Pits Nevere trail takes hikers to restored ice huts, which were once used to chill milk before it was churned into butter.
The brave can marvel at the landscape around Monte Generoso from the air by paragliding from the top. Flights start on Monte Generoso and glide in different directions over the lakes, countryside and towns.
