Description

The coat of arms of Laufenburg shows a red lion on a gold background. This lion can be seen throughout the Swiss and German towns of Laufenburg, on a fountain, on front doors, set into the ground, on a wall or as a fresco painting. There are 21 lions to discover on the round trip through the sister towns of Laufenburg, eventually revealing the solution to a brain teaser.
The lion was the heraldic beast of the Habsburgs, a noble family who ruled Laufenburg. The Habsburg lion was already depicted in the town’s municipal seal in 1250. Laufenburg was a single town until 1801. After the Habsburgs suffered defeat in the war against France, the Rhine became the border. Klein Laufenburg became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden and later Germany, while Groß Laufenburg became part of the canton of Aargau and Switzerland.
Here’s how it works:
1. First get a copy of the flyer from the tourist information office. Alternatively you can print one out yourself
2. Start searching for lions as you explore the two sister towns of Laufenburg
3. If you find all the lions and get the solution right, you can collect an impressive certificate from the tourist office.
