Lej Nair

Lej Nair is a well-kept secret. Usually, you’ll only have to share the little mountain lake in Lower Engadine with a few locals. Quiet and – as the name suggests – dark, it is located on an upland moor above Tarasp.
Lej Nair mountain lake is an ideal place for bikers and hikers to picnic and grill. By contrast, bathing in the peat-blackened water is something only for the brave. But if you dare to, you’ll be rewarded: In the summer, despite the 1800 metre elevation, the water warms up to a pleasant 20 degrees. This is thanks to the lake’s dark colour, which absorbs the sun’s warmth particularly well.

The lake is easily accessible from Scuol and Tarasp. A hike from Scuol through the wildly romantic Clemgia gorge via the hamlet of Avrona to Lej Nair is particularly recommendable. It’s worth staying until sunset. This is because the sunset’s especially impressive here due to the reflection in the water. Lej Nair can only be reached on foot.
