In Zug, you can explore the old town with the Zytturm and Landsgemeindeplatz and enjoy Lake Zug on a boat trip or at the lido. The city is located at the foot of the Rigi, not far from Einsiedeln, Lucerne and Zurich and is known for its impressive sunsets.
This is Zug
Zug is located in central Switzerland between
Zurich and
Lucerne. Its idyllic location on
Lake Zug, the historic old town, and the wide variety of leisure opportunities make Zug a popular travel destination.
Discover Zug
Start your sightseeing in the
old town with its charming boutiques and the
Landsgemeindeplatz. In summer, concerts, the weekly market, or the cherry market bring the square to life. Stroll along the picturesque lakeshore under shady trees – perhaps stopping at a refreshment stand or gelateria. End your walk at the
"Guggi" viewpoint or on the
Zugerberg: From there, you can enjoy a unique view of the old town, lake, and mountains.
The old town of Zug
Your old town tour begins at Zug’s landmark, the
Zytturm with its astronomical clock. The Capuchin, Powder, and Knöpfli Towers are also part of the former city fortifications. While strolling through the cobbled alleys, marvel at well-preserved historical sites such as the Liebfrauen Chapel or the world’s oldest goldsmith’s house. After a detour to
Zug Castle with its historical museum, it’s time for a coffee break on the
Landsgemeindeplatz. While tasting a piece of Zug cherry cake, enjoy the view of Lake Zug.
Lake Zug and sunsets
Lake Zug lies nestled between hills and the Alps. Walk along the lakeside paths or treat yourself to a
lake cruise, combined with a visit to the
Rigi. In summer, relax at pretty swimming spots like the Zug lido or Villette Park in the neighbouring village of Cham. Hopefully, you’ll get to enjoy one of the spectacular sunsets Zug is famous for — whether on the lakeside promenade, aboard a ship, or on the Zugerberg.
Around Zug
Not far from Zug lies the Lorzentobel with its castle ruins, fireplaces, and the magical
Höllgrotten. Or visit the
baroque monastery at the
pilgrimage site of Einsiedeln. Other top excursion destinations include
Lake Zurich with the metropolis of Zurich, and the city of Lucerne on
Lake Lucerne.
Experience Zug for less
From May to September, the
Zug Card allows you to travel free of charge by train, bus, and boat throughout the canton of Zug. During the bathing season, admission to Zug’s lakeside bathing areas is also free.
