Engstligen Falls / Engstligenalp

Description

A natural spectacle in a class of their own are the 600m long Engstligen waterfalls. Under preservation since 1948, these are the second longest falls in Switzerland.
The falls can be reached by foot from Adelboden in 90 minutes. or by bus. During the summer, the mountain footpath leads from Unter dem Birg along the roaring falls on the Engstligenalp. This water spectacle can be enjoyed in summer via a circular trail and the whole year round from above in a cable car cabin. Chäligang fixed rope route, right next to the gigantic waterfall, is popular with young and old due to its low level of difficulty.

With its wide meadowlands, breathtaking panoramic views and its long established «mountain traditions», Engstligenalp has won a place in the 1996 Swiss Cultural Survey as a site of national significance. The 2000m high plateau serves as a starting point for many walking trails and mountain tours. A flat, uninterrupted circular trail (wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly) begins conveniently close the mountain station. It leads across the high plateau, past chattering mountain streams, grazing cows and homely mountain huts back to the starting point.
