Grimsel gneiss and Glacial Ice

  • Image 1

Description

The Grimsel area is a landscape of ancient stone and primeval forces. This pass has always been used to cross from North to South or vice-versa. It also constitutes the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean and offers some spectacular hikes, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs on the vertical granite walls.
An excursion to the Oberaar Glacier is a wonderful day excursion. Leave the Husegg station on the Grimsel Pass Road, pass the Triebtenseeli to the Oberaar Lake and Glacier. The glacier has shaved the steeper hills into the humpbacked landscape visible today. The Oberaar Lake often contains ice floes which is not further surprising given that the water comes directly from the nearby glacier. It presents a picture perfect vision of a glacier: brilliantly white.
