Description

The River Aare between Uttigen and Bern is extremely popular for all kinds of boat trips, offering an alternative route into the Swiss capital. The water-meadow landscape is an enchanting and secluded wilderness amid the densely populated countryside.
In Thun, the Aare leaves the Alps and becomes an easily navigable winding river. The “Bernese Aare Canoe” route by SwitzerlandMobility begins a few kilometres downriver in Uttigen. It starts beneath the railway bridge, because the “Uttiger Schwelle” rapids can only be recommended for proficient boaters.

From here you can pass through the wonderful river landscape at a more leisurely pace, but always with care and attention. Although the Aare flows through a densely populated area here, it has retained its surprisingly untamed character. Some of its water repeatedly disappears into numerous side streams, creating one of Switzerland's largest water-meadow landscapes.

In Münsingen and Muri there are two bathing areas, though landing is only practical in Muri. Afterwards, pass by the Dählhölzli Animal Park before going ashore after Bern's famous Marzili outdoor pool on the left. You'll know you've arrived in Bern when the Federal Parliament building (Bundeshaus) suddenly appears right in front of you!
Since 1 January 2020, it has been mandatory to carry either a life jacket or a life ring per person.
