Appenzellerland

The hilly landscape of the Appenzellerland stretches from Lake Constance up to the Säntis. You can explore its pretty hamlets and villages along the countless footpaths and experience its traditions and customs right in front of you.
The hilly pre-Alpine landscape and impressive rock faces of the Säntis range offer a wide diversity of hiking trails. The network of trails extends no less than 1,200 km. They include around 20 themed trails that families will find particularly enjoyable. There are fine panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alpstein range to be had from all the little villages and hamlets along the way. Guests are invited to enjoy these views, to get to know the living local traditions and customs, and to savour the excellent cuisine.
No other region of Switzerland can rival the Appenzellerland for traditions and customs that still form an integral part of everyday life. As soon as nature awakes from its winter sleep, herdsmen in their traditional costumes lead their colourfully adorned animals to the Alpine pastures. From July to September, “Stobete” festivals are celebrated with folk music, dancing and yodelling (“Zauren”). In the autumn, there are cattle shows, in which the best of breed is chosen. “Silvesterchlausen” is celebrated on St. Sylvester's Day, the last day of the year, and again on 13 January. In a unique tradition, men and boys don old-time masks, colourful robes and the characteristic headdresses, and go from door to door, yodelling.
Meanwhile, the Appenzellerland is transformed into a snow-white fairytale landscape to gladden the heart of outdoor fans, whether they are out and about on snowshoes, cross-country or touring skis, or simply on foot.
