Biosfera Val Müstair

The Biosfera Val Müstair nature reserve is a little world of its own on the other side of the Ofen Pass. With its lush green meadows and well-kept villages, it provides a contrast to the untamed nature of the nearby National Park.
The Biosfera Val Müstair is a regional nature reserve of national importance and, together with the Swiss National Park and parts of the municipality of Scuol, forms the first UNESCO high Alpine biosphere reserve in Switzerland. In the sunny Val Müstair mountain valley, 80% of local farmers work entirely organically. The multifaceted crafts practised in the valley reflect the traditions of the area and are focused on quality. The region offers a unique cultural and natural landscape. Val Müstair is home to a number of special gems, such as the Convent of St. John UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Manufactura Tessanda weaving mill, many museums as well as the typical Graubünden villages – surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape. From the bottom of the valley of the river Rombach up to the highest mountain peaks, a variety of habitats offer outstanding conditions for a large number of wild animals. This balanced interaction between ecology and economy should also guarantee a livelihood for local people for many years to come.
