Description

In Maloja in the Upper Engadine, a smugglers' adventure trail has opened which enables visitors to enjoy both unique natural scenery and exciting stores. Along the trail, visitors get to learn exciting facts about the mythical smugglers' routes and the goods that the «contrabbandieri» took with them.
Over the course of one and a half hours, the Capel smugglers' trail takes walkers along the Swiss and Italian frontiers from Maloja to the neighbouring Val Malenco in Italy. It also wends its way along age-old paths through the mountain forests to the Lägh da Bitabergh. 17 stages along the route provide fascinating insights into the lives and activities of the smugglers and are combined to create a game of knowledge, fun and exercise.

Smuggling was an important source of income for the people of Bergell and Engadine from the early 19th century until the mid 20th century. The local people made good business mainly smuggling food and luxury goods which helped to make their lives more pleasant in the harsh mountain valleys.
