The Freiämterweg is a regional nature and cultural hiking trail. Freiamt is a name that dates back to the Middle Ages and a description of a part of Aargau. The area extends from Mellingen in the north via Muri down to Aargau’s southern border with the cantons of Lucerne and Zug.

Highlights include monasteries and convents, old towns, magnificently restored churches and well-preserved farmhouses. The route takes you along the banks of the Reuss and a number of streams. Small pretty villages along the way invite you to linger awhile.

The network of paths is designed in such a way as to allow you to break them down into several stages and reach them easily by public transportation. Light brown cultural hiking path signposts are provided at all stages of the Freiämterweg.
