The Alpine Cheese Trail links seven alp dairies on an attractive hiking route through Engelberg’s diverse countryside. On the Alps, you’ll discover the appeal of the traditional alpine cheese and learn all about how difficult life can be on the summer grazing pastures.
The new Alpine Cheese Trail is an appetising hike that includes seven different dairies. Here, farmers produce a range of outstanding cheeses by hand from the finest alpine milk every day. Summer visitors can sample the delicious cheese on a walk through the varied and picturesque countryside. On every mountain farm, or “Alp”, there is a board providing information about the owners and the surroundings. Sometimes, hikers are able to chat with the cheesemakers, who sell their products on site.
The entire trail covers the same distance as a marathon – so anyone planning to complete it in full should plan their hike over two to three days. Shorter sections of the route can also be completed on a day hike or individual excursion. The hike can be made shorter by taking a cable car or funicular railway, or you can cover the whole route by bike or e-bike.
Motor scooters are also available for hire, which, together with the playgrounds and an award-winning quiz, make the hiking trail an attractive option for families. And if you fancy refreshment, various cafés and restaurants can be found along the trail.
