Sparenmoos – mystical moorland walk

  • Image 1

Description

A themed moorland walk above Zweisimmen tells walkers about the origins of moors and how to protect them. The path passes through "moorland scenery of particular beauty and national importance", which is under special protection.
Moors are damp, poorly nourished, acidic habitats. Only very robust and undemanding plants and animals can live here. This is why you find "specialist" plants on moors such as sedges, rushes, cotton grass and orchids. Their particular colours and shapes are distinguishing features of the landscape.
A platform made of tree trunks also offers fascinating insights into the habitat of wild animals. If you are lucky, you may be able to observe chamois in the wildlife conservation area near a rushing stream.
For families, there is a "treasure hunt" to follow to discover the area, which covers nearly 1200 acres.
