Wengen

A car-free mountain village featuring wooden chalets and plenty of sun: this is Wengen, at the foot of the Jungfrau. It serves as the ideal starting point for your excursions to Grindelwald, the Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch. The view of the Bernese Alps and Lauterbrunnen is sure to inspire you.

This is Wengen

Wengen is a picturesque mountain village in the Jungfrau Region, in the middle of the Bernese Oberland. It is located on a sheltered sunny terrace, at 1,274 metres above sea level, and offers what is probably the most beautiful view of Lauterbrunnen Valley. In winter, it acts as the venue for the Lauberhorn ski race.

Discover Wengen

Stroll through the idyllic village with its wooden chalets and art nouveau hotels. At the church or on one of the “Staubbach benches”, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the iconic Staubbach Falls. In one of the mountain restaurants, enjoy a fondue alongside a view of the mountains, which turn pink to red at sunset.

At the foot of the Jungfrau

Its location is what makes Wengen so special: the view of the Bernese Alps, which includes the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, is uniquely beautiful. The village is an ideal starting point for hikes, mountain tours and winter sports fun. And with a changeover at the Kleine Scheidegg, you can reach the world-famous Jungfraujoch.

Alpine idyll with nostalgia

The Wengernalp Railway, with its yellow and green carriages, has reached cult status. The longest cogwheel railway in the world takes you to car-free Wengen and on to Grindelwald and the Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger north face in comfort. The panorama benches also enjoy cult status in Switzerland. In Wengen, these are placed wherever you have the best views of the valley and the mighty mountain panorama. Is the bench already being used? Feel free to sit down next to them – and maybe you’ll learn a few interesting facts about the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Around Wengen

The cable car takes its passengers up to the Männlichen directly from the village itself, and in summer the roof can even be opened up. At the top, the Royal Walk beckons, with what are probably the most impressive views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Or you can take the first train from Wengen to the Jungfraujoch shortly before eight and immerse yourself in a world of ice and snow.

Experience Wengen for less

The Jungfrau Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass or Bernese Oberland Pass are particularly worthwhile around Wengen. Hop on and off wherever you want and travel freely on the Wengernalpbahn, Eiger Express and to the Männlichen. Picnic instead of a restaurant? Around Wengen, you’ll find a few secluded areas with barbecue spots and panoramic benches.
