Lake Oeschinen

The lake is also known as the jewel of Kandersteg: with its turquoise blue water and unique natural scenery, Lake Oeschinen is a top destination in the Bernese Oberland. Whether you come for the hiking, picnicking, rowing or bathing – you will be amazed at its beauty.

This is Lake Oeschinen

Lake Oeschinen is located in southwestern Switzerland, in the Bernese Oberland. It is considered one of the most beautiful Swiss mountain lakes and is part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover Lake Oeschinen

Your excursion begins in Kandersteg. A cable car takes you to the upper station with a view of the Kandertal Valley in just 15 minutes. Follow the panoramic trail for half an hour to reach Lake Oeschinen with its incomparable scenery and waterfalls. Take a break on the shore or in a mountain restaurant and enjoy the natural beauty.

Hiking around Lake Oeschinen

The area around Lake Oeschinen is a paradise for hikers. You will need sturdy shoes and sure-footedness for the Heuberg circular hike or the ascent to the Fründenhütte. It is advisable to check the weather conditions in advance, as individual trails may be closed due to snow or rock falls. Another hiking tip for cold weather: if the ice is sufficiently thickness and there is enough snow, an ice walk is created across the frozen lake.

Rowing on Lake Oeschinen

The most beautiful way to experience Lake Oeschinen is from a rowing boat. Berghaus Arva rents boats out from May to October. Row out onto the water and enjoy the peace and quiet and the magical atmosphere. In the summer months, the lake also offers super bathing conditions.

In and around Lake Oeschinen

Taking the cable car from Kandersteg, you can reach the Allmenalp with its waterfalls and probably the most spectacular via ferrata in Switzerland. Experience the Blausee Nature Park in the Kandertal with its crystal-clear water. The Lötschberg railway takes you from Kandersteg directly to Valais. Other top excursion destinations include the Kiental Valley, Lake Thun with the cities of Spiez and Thun and Interlaken with the Jungfrau Region.
