Lake Thun

Experience the beauty of the Bernese Oberland on Lake Thun. Historic castles, romantic lakeside towns and the view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau will inspire you. Combine a boat trip with an excursion to the St. Beatus Caves, the Niederhorn or the city of Thun.

This is Lake Thun

Lake Thun is situated in the west of Switzerland, in the Bernese Oberland. The city of Thun, the numerous sights and boat trips all make Lake Thun a top destination for excursions.

Discover Lake Thun

Whether you’re visiting Lake Thun from the enchanting city of Thun or the adventure city of Interlaken: the contrast in colour between the deep blue lake, the lush green meadows and the white mountain peaks is striking indeed. On the southern shore, you will find pretty seaside resorts with an almost Mediterranean ambience. The steeply sloping northern shore is a dream route for convertible and motorcycle enthusiasts. Lake Thun is also very popular when it comes to water sports.

Boat trips on Lake Thun

There’s no doubt about it: a boat trip on the largest lake in the Bernese Oberland is an experience that is one of a kind. You’ll enjoy wonderful views of the mountains and the castles here. And you can hop on and off at 16 destinations around the lake. The most beautiful ship in the Lake Thun fleet is the “Blümlisalp” paddle steamer. Or how about a pleasure trip on the “OaSee” lounge cruiser?

Sights on Lake Thun

Five castles invite you to embark on a journey through time. The mighty Thun Castle offers incomparable views of the city, lake and mountains from its towers. The view of the Oberhofen and Schadau castles from the ship is truly romantic. You can cool off in summer at the mystical St. Beatus Caves with their stalactite formations. The panorama bridge near Sigriswil – part of the Lake Thun panoramic circular trail – is spectacular.

Around Lake Thun

Lake Thun’s mountains are ideal for a trip to the heights – all three are well served by cable cars and mountain railways. The Niesen with its pyramid shape is the region’s most popular panoramic mountain. You can reach the Niederhorn from Beatenbucht and enjoy fantastic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On the Stockhorn, the mountain tunnel and its viewing platform will inspire you.

Experience Lake Thun for less

As an overnight guest in the region, you will receive the PanoramaCard Thunersee, which will allow you to travel for free on most local buses. The Bernese Oberland Pass is well worthwhile for any excursions: it makes the use of public transport, including boat trips and over 25 cable cars and mountain railways, free of charge.
