Hundwil is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland .

Hundwil is first mentioned in 921 as Huntwilare.

Hundwil has an area, as of 2006, of 24.1 km2 (9.3 sq mi). Of this area, 58.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 31.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3.2% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (7.1%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).

Hundwil was a capital of the former district Hinterland.
