In un futuro cupo, 100 giovani partecipano all'annuale «Long Walk»: devono camminare costantemente a una velocità di quattro miglia all'ora e chi riceve tre avvertimenti nell'arco di un'ora viene fucilato. Solo l'ultimo sopravvissuto otterrà tutto ciò che desidera. Durante questa competizione spietata nascono strette amicizie, anche se tutti sanno che solo uno potrà sopravvivere.
