History
Botterens is first mentioned in 1227 as Botterens. The municipality was formerly known by its German name Botteringen, however, that name is no longer used.
Geography
Botterens has an area, as of 2009, of 4.2 square kilometers (1.6 sq mi). Of this area, 1.46 km2 (0.56 sq mi) or 35.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.26 km2 (0.87 sq mi) or 54.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.38 km2 (0.15 sq mi) or 9.2% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.07 km2 (17 acres) or 1.7% is unproductive land.
