A richly varied, cross-border mountain-bike tour in and around Switzerland's northernmost canton. Vineyards, the Randen mountain, River Rhine, with attractive resting spots along the route.
On the Schaffhauserland Bike route you're right at the top of Switzerland and can explore the north, including the country's northerly point, the Schwarzen Stein (Black Stone)! The heart of the tour is the Randen, a rather little-known and in parts wild spur of the Jura. The entire cross-border round tour offers the chance to explore the landscape north and south of the Rhine – away from normal traffic routes. There's no skimping on highlights. North of the Rhine are the thundering Rhine Falls (Europe's largest waterfall), the Schaffhauser Blauburgunderland with the largest unbroken vineyard area in German-speaking Switzerland in Klettgau, views of the Alpine chain from the Randentürmen (Randen towers), and far-reaching views to the southern Black Forest and the volcanic cones in Hegnau. The well-earned views from the Hohenklingen fortress above the medieval town of Stein am Rhein are a feast for the eyes. South of the Rhine, the route leads through the picturesque villages of the cantons of Thurgau and Zurich, with their resplendent timber-framed buildings, then on over gently rolling hills and past idyllic lakes and ponds. It doesn't always have to be high mountains – mountain-biking can be just as much fun in the rolling hills of north-east Switzerland! Ideal for families and the leisurely biker.
