Rhine Gorge (Ruinaulta)

Description

The Rhine Gorge in Graubünden is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Switzerland. Stand on the Il Spir viewing platform, hike along the Rhine or ride the Rhaetian Railway through the gorge.

The Rhine Gorge at a glance

Ruinaulta is the Rhaeto-Romanic name of the Rhine Gorge and means "high pile of rubble". Around 9,500 years ago, the Flims landslide buried the Anterior Rhine Valley under rock masses. The Rhine dammed up to form a 25-kilometre-long lake and over time dug a 13-kilometre-long gorge through the mass of rubble.
