Appenzell

Appenzell is synonymous with the most beautiful Swiss traditions, such as yodelling, cheese, seasonal cattle processions and traditional dances. Marvel at magnificently decorated houses and living craftsmanship. Conquer the Alpstein massif, with the Säntis, Lake Seealpsee and the Berggasthaus Äscher mountain inn.

This is Appenzell

Appenzell is the tradition-steeped capital of Appenzell Innerrhoden. It can be found in the northeast of Switzerland, between the Alpstein massif and Lake Constance.

Discover Appenzell

If you come to Appenzell, it’ll be well worth taking a stroll through the car-free town centre with its brightly painted house facades and imaginatively forged signs. You can discover the town via an artistic landscape map that will lead you to 48 treasures: among other things, to the Landsgemeindeplatz with its open-air parliament, to Roman Signer’s “Wassertisch” and to the ruins of Clanx Castle.

Traditions in and around Appenzell

Nowhere else in Switzerland are traditions such as natural yodelling and the Talerschwingen coin game lived and cultivated to the same extent as in Appenzell. Looking for an original souvenir? Here, you will find handmade woodcarvings and iconic traditional folk costume accessories. Appenzell is also famous for its culinary specialities, such as Biberfladen – a kind of ginger bread, Nidelzeltli caramel tablets and Appenzeller cheese. The local brewery offers Quöllfrisch beer, and the popular Goba lemonades can be found at the “Flauderei”. Highlights include the alpine descents and the cattle shows that showcase the most beautiful cows.

Lake Seealpsee and the Ebenalp

Want to make a stop at the Äscher that everyone raves about? Then it’ll be well worth taking the Appenzell Railway to Wasserauen early in the morning and hiking from there to the enchanting Lake Seealpsee. After a visit to the alpine cheese dairy, you’ll climb the mountain until you find yourself standing right in front of the mountain inn, which has been built into the rock itself. From here, it’s on past the Wildkirchli caves to the Ebenalp cable car and back down into the valley.

Around Appenzell

A trip to the Alpstein massif is a must on any visit to Appenzell. In addition to the three mountain lakes, and the cable cars up to Säntis, Kronberg or Hoher Kasten, you will also find rustic mountain inns and the densest network of hiking trails in all of Switzerland. Other highlights around Appenzell include the show dairy in Stein, the town of St. Gallen and Lake Constance.
