Raron
Raron: Rilke's village. St. German: wine producing village. Niedergesteln: farming village. Come here to experience the great outdoors, history, art and culture.
Visit Raron, where the poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, found his final resting place in the churchyard of the Burgkirche on top of the mountain. Here you can really feel the southern air and light. With 500 seats, the Michaelskirche (St. Michael's) is currently Europe's largest church which is entirely located inside the rock. From Raron you can travel on into the Bietsch valley, where myth and reality can be found cheek by jowl in the "Nostrils" and the gorge. In the arena in the Goler, three or four times a year there is a Swiss cow fight featuring the local Eringer breed. On the way to St. German you will find the entrance to the Neat Century Tunnel.
St. German is part of the Raron commune and is surrounded by vineyards, a legacy of the Romans. Once a year, there is a cultural/culinary walk along the "Culture Path" which takes you through the wine producing village of St. German. Why not enjoy a delicious glass of wine yourself produced entirely in the village?
In Niedergesteln you will find the remains of a castle, the well tended old farming village with its Wefahaus and clock museum, as well as caves in the hill on which the castle stands, dating back to the ice age and through which you can walk. A further highlight is the suspension bridge that stretches over the Joli gorge. This is a fantastic example of how nature and modern technology do not have to clash, but can sit comfortably together.
Family holiday homes in the villages of St. German and Niedergesteln, as well as the hotels and two campsites in Raron all look forward to welcoming you to this delightful spot.
