Siamo nel 1956: la copywriter Emmi Creola ha il compito di commercializzare i prodotti di un'azienda produttrice di oli alimentari e, nonostante l'opposizione della sua agenzia, inventa il personaggio immaginario di Betty Bossi. La fittizia «cuoca e casalinga della nazione» diventa popolare, riceve lettere dai fan ed Emmi finisce sotto i riflettori. Tra l'agenzia, l'invidia dei colleghi maschi e la famiglia, Emmi è sempre più logorata.
